Olin ennen kuin olinki--
olin kuin omenankukka
puolankukka kumpareella
isä kutsu kukkaseksi
emo päivän nousennaksi

Läksin piennä paimenehen --

tulin rannalle ojasen

tuolta poikanen putosi
solki suussa, vyö käessä

minä raukka itkemähän --
poikanen kyselemähän
mitäs itket, nuori neito?
itkempä minä jotaki
itken pientä veikkoani
en ole sitten silmin nähnyt
piennä kun sotahan lähti

älä itke veikkoasi --
tuolta veljesi tulevi
alta linnan airot souti
päältä linnan pää näkyvi

minä kurja kuulemahan
kurja ja katala katsomahan

veikko seisoi vieresäni --
eessäni emosen lapsi
