A wiki (pronounced "WICK-ee" or "WEE-kee") is a web site that allows its visitors to create, add to, or edit much of its content. In the case of LyricWiki, it is a web site that provides information about lyrics, songs, albums, musical artists and groups. All of this information is collaboratively created and edited by the visitors to the site. This collaborative nature means that no page within the site is ever truly finished, but instead is able to be expanded and improved upon as LyricWiki itself is expanded and improved upon.

The word "wiki" is a Hawaiian-language word for fast. The word is also sometimes interpreted as the backronym for "What I Know Is", which describes the knowledge contribution, storage, and exchange function of a wiki.
