April
- April 30, 2008: Steve Winwood:Valerie nominated by LD0ne.
- Valerie which was released in 1982 on Steve Winwood album Taking Back The Night, it was written by Steve and Will Jennings and is the 1st track on the CD. The song deals with a man reminiscing about a lost love he hopes to find again someday. On another tangent I wanted to nominate this song because the "Call on Me" part of the chorus has been used in a popular dance song by Eric Prydz and is just a constant horrible repeat of that over and over and over again over beats. Just remember people the original songs are always the best.
- April 29, 2008: The Mars Volta:Cassandra Gemini nominated by Emyu.
- The Mars Volta has several long songs. The album this song is featured on, Frances the Mute, has only one song under 10 minutes long. Cassandra Gemini, however, clocking in at just over 32 minutes long in its entirety, is possibly their most jarring song. It follows the mild Miranda with a bang, and carries its own weight to the end of the album. Although record companies broke the song up into several tracks, into as many as 8 tracks by some distributor, this is a piece to be enjoyed in its full form.
- April 28, 2008: Cherry Poppin' Daddies:Zoot Suit Riot nominated by Kiefer.
- Oregon band Cherry Poppin' Daddies took full advantage of the resurgence of swing music in the late 90s, and Zoot Suit Riot was their biggest hit. The song, full of swing-styled tongue-in-cheek humor is a reminder that swing music was to the Roarin' 20s what Hip Hop is to the modern era. Sexual innuendo, barely-veiled drug references, and macho oneupmanship are key components of each, and this song has all of those and is the prime musical example of the Swing Revival. Now you sailors know where your women come for love....'
- April 27, 2008: Behemoth:Antichristian Phenomenon nominated by That Guy.
- The front man for this band, Nergal, can change the range of his growls in a way so greatly that interest is added to the song. This type of music may not be for the weak-hearted, but the vocals and guitars are just too hard to stay away from.
- April 26, 2008: Yes:Leave It nominated by Kiefer.
- From the choir-like opening, to the staccato rhythms, to the constantly-changing musical themes, to the sudden dramatic ending, this song continually pleases the ear. Although Owner of a Lonely Heart is the most famous track Yes from this time period, Leave It is equally exciting. One of those songs in my music collection that I never tire of no matter how often I listen.
- April 25, 2008: The Strokes:Reptilia nominated by DannyParekh.
- This song is a true inspiration to guitar-god-hopefuls everywhere, shown by its appearance in the game "Guitar Hero III". It is a true Strokes classic with its stylish riffs and tantalizing lyrics.
- April 24, 2008: Ryan Adams:Come Pick Me Up nominated by Tearzonboyzcheekz.
- I think Ryan Adams' version of this amazing song transcends the simplicity of the arrangement and lyrics. The harmonica gasps for comfort as Adams' voice fades into an abyss of loneliness. I can hear the sadness in the light guitar, coupled with Adams' sometimes-smooth and sometimes-raspy cry for love. The pain one feels when a heart is not scarred over is immense in this song. I openly weep every time I hear this song, as will you: he or she who has felt this harmonic pain, praying for the empty hurt to go away, the same for me.
- April 23, 2008: Dishwalla:Counting Blue Cars nominated by LD0ne.
- When you think about 90s music this song should immediately come to your mind or at least be in the top ten. Being on Dishwalla's most popular album Pet Your Friends (1995), the track earned them a Billboard Award for "Best Rock Song" for 1996 as well as two ASCAP Awards for "Rock Track Of The Year" in both 1996 and 1997. This song got so big that it was impossible for Dishwalla to top it even thought they tried hard releasing And You Think You Know What Lifes About (1998) which didn't have as much success as Pet Your Friends did.
- April 22, 2008: Garth Brooks:The Dance nominated by Timmywa.
- This song is so incredibly written and performed and it also introduced a young guy who was, at the time, into Pop radio to another world of music, Country. I love it and it almost brings me to tears each time I listen.
- April 21, 2008: My Chemical Romance:The Ghost Of You nominated by LD0ne.
- It's real hard for me to nominate a song from an Emo album, but The Ghost of You is one of the best emo songs I've ever heard. Gerard constantly puts his emotion into every song he sings and The Ghost of You is absolutely dripping with emotion with the song being about the fear of loss. If you listen enough you easily relate to the fact that loss has affected us all in one way or another. The video is wonderful as well showing a very disturbing scene that is supposed to be D-Day from WWII and the USO show that keeps cutting in and out during the video showing us the ghosts from the war scenes.
- April 20, 2008: Lee Greenwood:God Bless The USA nominated by Andrew Horne.
- The popularity of this patriotic song rose sharply as it paid the honor to the people who were lost in the September 11, 2001 attacks and during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. This is considered to be Lee Greenwood's signature song.
- April 19, 2008: Blue:Guilty nominated by Sauron.
- One of the best love songs. Describes how one accepts it if loving someone is a crime. It doesn't deter people from loving with all their heart, pouring out their heart....
- April 18, 2008: Van Halen:Eruption/You Really Got Me nominated by Cubs Fan2007.
- Since "Eruption" bleeds into "You Really Got Me" on the Van Halen album, I think it's appropriate that they be nominated together. The former is an exceptional display of Eddie's guitar playing, while the latter is the band's famous cover of the song originated by The Kinks. The Van Halen version follows the Kinks version quite closely, but has its own taste and uniqueness to it. It's not as power chord-driven as the original, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. And David Lee Roth brings his own style to the song's lyrics. I think they both deserve to be SOTD. Audio
- April 17, 2008: John Mellencamp:Jackie Brown nominated by Kiefer.
- One of Mellencamp's songwriting strengths is his ability to create powerful vignettes into the lives of average people. Jack & Diane may be his most famous such tale, but his album Big Daddy has three in a row, of which Jackie Brown is the last. It is a powerful vision of a poor man's life (and death) and brings to the listener the sense of despair and of being trapped in a life without hope of improvement that many such people feel. Haunting and brilliant.
- April 16, 2008: Rainbow:The Temple Of The King nominated by Cubs Fan2007.
- The sixth track from Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is one of the best examples of the shared interest between Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie Dio of medieval themes and imagery. Blackmore's guitar riff brings forth images of medieval minstrels, and Dio's lyrics match the music perfectly. After Man on the Silver Mountain, this is my favorite track from the album, and one of my top favorites in Rainbow's whole catalogue.
- April 15, 2008: R.E.M.:It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) nominated by 76.27.70.214.
- Quite possibly one of the best and most defining songs of the 80s, this song deserves more recognition of its greatness. Combining lyrics of pure insanity with a tune reminiscent of riding a roller coaster, it is a song that will always remain in one's thoughts. An incredible combination of doom and "jellybeans and cheesecake," this is definitely one of the most integral songs of the 80s.
- April 14, 2008: The Beatles:Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) nominated by Selecao.
- This song doesn't have many lyrics, just 5 stanzas of 2 lines each, but then the music and the effect it creates makes you feel just so out of this world. This song will always have an element of mystery for me, you just can't figure out what they are trying to say in these 10 lines.
- April 13, 2008: George Thorogood & The Destroyers:Bad To The Bone nominated by Cubs Fan2007.
- The guitar hook is one of the most recognizable in rock music, and is also one of the most infectious. Once you hear that hook, it's almost a requirement that you hear the song all the way to the end. The song is what put Thorogood on the map, and has since become associated with the "bad boy" image of leather jackets, denim jeans, steel-toed boots, and dark shades. It has also been featured in a number of the most successful films of all time; my favorites being Terminator 2 and the 1998 version of The Parent Trap.
- April 12, 2008: Breaking Benjamin:Blow Me Away nominated by LD0ne.
- Why is this song nominated? Because it comes from one of the biggest video games out there (Halo 2) and when you listen to it you just want to jump around and hit stuff! Between Ben's wonderful angry voice to the discordant loud guitar blasting your ears into oblivion, how can you not like this song!? The Lyrics work nicely together and this song just makes me wanna Mosh!
- April 11, 2008: 30 Seconds To Mars:The Kill nominated by Shadow69.
- This song is just awesome. The lyrics just flow so smoothly. Plus the message the song portrays is just so deep. The song is about confronting your true self. In the video all of the band members meet tuxedoed versions of themselves, hence the lyrics "This is who I really am!" It's just awesome!
- April 10, 2008: Aerosmith:The Train Kept A-Rollin' nominated by Cubs Fan2007.
- I've never really gotten into Aerosmith's work, but this is one of my favorite covers. They took the song as performed by The Yardbirds and made it their own. The flawless guitar work is, interestingly, not provided by Joe Perry, but Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. In addition, Steven Tyler could give Keith Relf a run for his money on vocals. I also think it was a great choice to include in the Harmonix video game Rock Band.
- April 09, 2008: The Smiths:Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others nominated by 210.50.68.3.
- A wonderfully melodramatic song due to Morrissey's singing, as well as his and Johnny Marr's often odd but classic lyrics. This song hooked me from the first listen.
- April 08, 2008: Lago en el cielo nominated by Anfoc.
- The ex-lead singer of Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati, is one of the most prolific musicians of Argentina and Latin America. His lyrics are deep and concise. Lago en el cielo (Lake in the Sky), a single from his last album Ahà Vamos, is one of my favourite Cerati songs, with its beautiful music and amazing lyrics.
- April 07, 2008: Pearl Jam:Black nominated by Abased Fear.
- This song tells a story of bittersweet love and, ultimately, loss. The narrator watches everything and everyone in his life slip away, and the loss has "turned his world to black." It is considered one of Pearl Jam's best songs musically and lyrically, despite never being made a single.
- April 06, 2008: Foo Fighters:The Pretender nominated by Mini Jo.
- When I first listened to this song I was blown away because it's fast and slow at the same time. Now, I listen to it everyday as it's one of those song you can identify yourself to the lyrics. One of their most successful singles and it's easy to see why.
- April 05, 2008: The Decemberists:The Infanta nominated by Gormster.
- This song has such lyrical beauty that it floors me every time I listen to it. The rhyme, rhythm and pristine perfect meter: it's pure poetry. Not to mention the rolling, raging beat and rich, full-on euphony.
- April 04, 2008: Fair To Midland:Dance Of The Manatee nominated by Eggman.
- Fair to Midland is a young band on the rise. The lead singer, Darroh's vocal range is so incredible, ranging from The Mars Volta high-pitched melody to earth-rumbling growls. The lyrics are very abstract and intelligent, allowing them to be interpreted as anything from prostitution, businesses, to anything else the mind can conjure. The transitions from heavy to soft music are flawless, showing the talent of these amazing musicians. This song will catch the ear of any music fan, whether they like metal or even artsy Pink Floyd.
- April 03, 2008: Straylight Run:Mistakes We Knew We Were Making nominated by 72.240.108.153.
- This song is amazing. It has great lyrics and is by a great band which deserves more recognition. The chorus' words are simply stunning and will grab your attention when you listen.
- April 02, 2008: Alter Bridge:In Loving Memory nominated by Mihawk90.
- I think this is a beautiful song with pretty good text that - so to say - speaks from my soul... I had such an experience, too... and that's why I love this song and want it as SOTD...
- April 01, 2008: Rick Astley:Never Gonna Give You Up nominated by Sean Colombo.
- April Fools! If you came to the site today, you got Rickroll'd.
