I think this song represents every soul of the four pink Floyd members and a truly wonderful tribute to Syd Barrett, not to mention that the use of synthesizers, guitars, vocals, and basses is awesome.
A very melancholy song by The Cars, this is written from the perspective of someone wondering if anyone will be there for him when he needs someone. When Benjamin Orr passed away, this was played in his honor at a memorial service at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. This was the Cars' highest-charting US single.
The song evokes real love, that feeling of shyness, yet excitement, like the first time for anything. It's a feeling that is so strong that you want it to last forever, even though you know nothing ever lasts forever. This song is so lyrically beautiful. There are several meanings that can be taken from these lyrics, some say it's about love and sex, some say it's about drugs and an addiction, and some say writter Dave Grohl, former Nivana drummer, wrote about former band singer, Kurt Cobain.
It's not very often that two singers and one group collaborate on one single song. It is equally unlikely that in a collaboration, every person's voice is heard almost all the time. This song is highly unique, very cool, and has a really catchy tune.
Like many Coldplay songs, this is about love. The lyrics are about being in a conflicted, but very intense relationship as precious time slips away. Lead singer Chris Martin came up with the lyrics and the piano riff shortly before Coldplay released the album. Since they didn't have much time, they put it aside and planned to work on it for their next album. When Martin's friend heard the demo, he convinced them to do whatever was necessary to record it for A Rush Of Blood To The Head, especially since the song deals with the importance of time. This won the Grammy for 2003 Record Of The Year. In accepting the award, lead singer Chris Martin dedicated it to the late Johnny Cash and to US presidential candidate John Kerry.
It's really difficult to have a song that's both cute and cool at the same time, and equally difficult for a rap to carry any emotion other than coolness. Heartsdales has done very well in making STAY cute and touching.
This is one of Slim Shady's most lyrically praised songs, that shows putting your family above all else, and heavy amounts of emotion, deserving of being the song of the day.
Lead singer Scott Weiland wrote this about his relationship troubles and his growing heroin addiction. When he wrote it, he thought about what kind of a liar he had become towards his fiance and how he had promised to stay off drugs when they went to Atlanta to record Purple, but didn't keep that promise.
Originally a pretty pop song about bridging the distance between two people (Distance), Final Distance was remade in honor of one of Utada's fans, a young girl who was murdered in a school massacre. The new version is slower, more thoughtful, and even more beautiful than the original.
Sting wrote this after he saw a brief news story about women dancing in the streets of Chile torn apart by the Pinochet regime. The women were dancing in the streets with pictures of their husbands, fathers, brothers or sons pinned to their clothes or they were holding the pictures and dancing with them.
This a cappella masterpiece is all boy-band ballads in one! If nothing else, it's a time saver.
'In the End is Linkin Park's highest charting single in most countries. It is often referred to as their signature song.
The song is a story of forbidden love between the singer and Rosalita, who apparently lives with her parents and needs encouragement to "come out tonight," as this is the crux of the song.
Harry would be 66 years old right now, had he not tragically left this life on July 16th, 1981. With the anniversary of his death approaching, it is important to remember one of America's greatest singer-songwriters. He was never as popular as Dylan, but was amazingly brilliant. He was active politically as well. Harry Forster Chapin 12-7-1942 - 07-16-1981.
The lyrics were based on Robert Johnson's 1936 "Terraplane Blues." A terraplane is a classic car, and the song uses car parts as metaphors for sex - "pump your gas," "rev all night," etc.
Because Teenagers combines great lyrics with a haunting melody, and it's one of the best MCR songs I've heard in a while.
Springsteen took the title from a 1958 Robert Mitchum movie. He did not see the film, but got the idea from a poster for it in a theater lobby. The vocal sound was inspired by Roy Orbison. Springsteen pays homage to him with the line: "The radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely," a reference to Orbison's 1960 hit, "Only The Lonely."
This song is about meeting with a cocaine dealer. The lyrics detail withdrawal symptoms from a cocaine high and the relief of knowing tonight is the night cocaine will be purchased. It deals with the struggle against the highly addictive drug.
With enchanting lyrics, beautiful vocals, and excellent instrumentals, KOTOKO has an incredible song.
The singer, Sharon, uses her voice really beautifully and different than she usually does. She sings really low, which makes it sound more angry. It really fits the song.
This song is about a guy stranded on a remote island. One day he finds a bottle, puts a message in it and throws it out to sea in hopes that someone will find it and come save him. The lyrics can be seen as a metaphor for being lonely and realizing there are lots of people just like you.
This song is lovely and mystic. I love the melody and Sharon's (the singer) voice in this song. Also the cello, which they used, is a great base for this song.
This is about a guy who thought everything was good but was blinded by the fact that the relationship was going to hell. She's left him lots of times, playing with his heart, but this time she's not coming back. He did what he could to keep her, but she's just never satisfied. According to lead singer Adam Levine, this song is about how he was fed up with his relationship with Jane and how the record label was pressuring the band for more songs.
Taken from Tool's latest album, 10,000 Days, Right in Two is an incredible song about human depravity, as viewed by Angels - who happen to be 'on the sideline'. It is easy to sit in the dark and simply concentrate on the sound...for 9 minutes you are not of this dimension, you are taken to a higher plane where you see humanity for what it is...put quite simply, it's beastly.
Queen did more popular songs, but this one deserves mention. Like Welcome to the Black Parade, it's an upbeat rocker about the inevitability of death.
The angelic voice of this London-based singer tells the common tale of heartbreak when the other person is clearly over you but you're not there yet. This was the long-awaited first single from her sophomore album, Life For Rent and more than worth the wait.
In this song, a man grabs his brother's rifle to practice his aim. The gun accidentally goes off and kills a lone rider. The song goes on to explain the verdict and how bad he felt and his plea for forgiveness. In the end, it is time for his own death, while the lone rider and him ride together to "Kingdom Come."
This song is one of BoA's prettiest songs. As usual, the lyrics are meaningful, metaphoric, and about being in love.
Springsteen wrote this about the inspirational power of rock music. It came to represent his friendship with members of his band.
An incredible song from Muse's Absolution. This song talks about Matthew's atheism and of what may be the thoughts of an atheist when it's on the point of dying. Even if this song isn't a hit and not as often played live as the other songs, it is as good as the other Absolution tracks.
