Welcome

Hey,
I created LyricWiki.org because I was as fed up as everyone else with having to deal with the annoying invasive ads on the various lyrics sites instead of having one reliable site where I could trust the accuracy of the lyrics, and not be overwhelmed by ads.

So if you like being able to find lyrics to any song, and don't mind our lack of an alien making racecar noises and selling you ringtones... you've come to the right place :)

This is an exciting step for all of us, so poke around the site, and if you see somewhere you can help, jump right in!

I'm a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology I recently withdrew from RIT to work fulltime on my emerging software company, Motive Force LLC which absorbs the financial burden of hosting this site. If you support Motive Force products, you're supporting this site. Although I never expect this site to break even on the costs of hosting it, I think it's always good "karma" for a company to give a little something back.

I'm proud to be from Pittsburgh, PA where the site is now hosted. Check out some of our local legends such as The Clarks and Rusted Root, and Christina Aguilera.

Some of my favorite bands at the moment are Cake, Pink Floyd, BNL, Staind, Tool and Pearl Jam.

I make really ugly user-pages apparently. My Pedlr page isn't that bad, but I used the editor for that. TrevorP, Frontway, and pretty much everyone else in the world has a better user-page than I do. Anywho... I spend most of my time () on the site over at the SOAP Failures page so that I can add missing music, create useful redirects, and most importantly: improve the SOAP's algorithms to have the highest successful response-rate possible. It's starting to get there.

If you have any concerns about the site, just go ahead and contact me; I don't bite.
Enjoy the site,

UPDATE

I realize I'm getting a bit behind these days. I'm still working on LyricWiki pretty much every day (not just normal contribs, but server stuff, optimizing code, adding stuff to the LyricWiki:SOAP, obsessing over the SOAP failures, tweaking the facebook app for lyrics, etc.)... anywho: I'm thinking about setting up a deployment of this open-source suggestions system soon so that people can weigh-in on what they think is the most important for me to be working on. Stay tuned (and PLEASE bug me if this message is still here and there is no link within 2 weeks!!!

CURRENTLY:

  1. Write the update-progress-tracking and artist-page-merging for ÜberBot so that he can start the update while I do this other stuff.
  2. Look into the Lucene extension that WikiMedia uses (thanks Pathoschild).
  3. Look into the API problem the user was having w/Flash.
  4. Look into PavelD's encoding issue in Perl
  5. Start logging the percentages of found vs. not-found again.
  6. Clear off talk page
  7. Fix API Performance problems
    1. Use memcached for some of the results?
    2. Maybe move forward with the non-case-sensitive lookup of titles so that there is a higher match rate. One better... use a "raw-title" that uses everything I know about song-title variants to make a single lookup per song.
    3. Possibly make the throttling mechanism just return after the first song looked for instead of dropping random requests. That will make the results good for common songs and bad for poorly-formatted titles... not sure if the number of results that could be served would be higher or lower
    4. Consider figuring out a way to cache all of the artist-redirects in memory so that they can be looked up easily w/o any DB reads (after raw-titles are added, looking for artist-redirects is the only reason multiple requests would be needed. Three if redirects are not cached - orig page, artist redirect, redirected page - and one if redirects get cached - just the redirected page.
  8. Guide UberBot through the rest of the iTunes updates (should be able to make the auto matching a lot better).
