Dead-end Pages

 • I have a script that is sitting around to fix dead-end pages (Full Discussion)

MusicBrainz Template

Hi, I've added a template for MusicBrainz artists and releases. Would be awesome if you could add these to the Artist template respectively the AlbumFooter template. Feel free to edit/change my template - since it was my first wiki template ever, I'm kinda surprised it actually works :> Firehawk 19:01, 16 December 2007 (EST)

Anime - does this look okay?

Hi, teknomunk.
I just did a little fiddling with the anime page Anime:爆裂天使 and added Wikipedia to it (idea came from 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱). The first try had the box visible on the related song page, but the <noinclude> seems to have done its work. ;) So, if that's okay, shall we add it to the other anime pages as well?

Oh, and a reference to the anime template on the LyricWiki:Japan page might help, too. I had to hunt around a bit to create an anime page... :P

Thanks. --BryghtShadow 04:07, 25 February 2008 (EST)

That looks fine. There are actually several pages (including the one you referenced) that should be moved over into an Anime: page. I should probably write up some documentation on it, but right now, I can't decide whether to put it under the Japan group page or under the general help.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 10:56, 25 February 2008 (EST)
I put up a basic page at LyricWiki:Japan/AnimeTemplates. It is currently not linked to anything.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 17:36, 25 February 2008 (EST)

Duplicate songs in 'Other' category

Thank you for your response/s.

OK, just one final question and I promise I'll leave you alone ;) With regards to the duplicate songs (often mis-spelt) displaying under the 'Other' section on artists pages, am I correct in thinking that this is the correct procedure to effect their removal:-

1) create redirect to correct page

2) remove the duplicate entry, by deleting the song entry from the 'Other' category on artist page

   Redxx    talk   16:12, 26 February 2008 (EST)

That would be correct.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 17:12, 26 February 2008 (EST)
Thank you. I've been working in the time since on cleaning up the Daniel Bedingfield page. It's been a bit of a challenge but I think my results indicate that maybe I'm now getting the hang of this (lol). Any critiscm/advice gratefully received however.    Redxx    talk   22:32, 26 February 2008 (EST)

New Song template

I put a little bit of info about the new parameters for the template, but I'm sure you can spruce things up and perhaps elaborate a bit better than I could. Check it out when/if you get a chance. (I haven't checked to see if the help page for Songs needs to be updated, though, now that I think about it.)    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   23:14, 27 February 2008 (EST)

Janitor

I was wondering if you had noticed that Janitor has not done anything since the 24th. Lonely pages has hit over 1000.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 03:12, 28 February 2008 (EST)

Wow, Janitor has forgotten how to log in... erm... It might be a while, my schedule is fairly full right now, but I'll get to it as soon as I can.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 03:17, 28 February 2008 (EST)
Never mind, I found it: when Sean changed the server settings to redirect www.lyricwiki.org to lyricwiki.org, it broke my bot. I'm fixing it now. Thanks for letting me know.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 03:24, 28 February 2008 (EST)
I figured that was what the issue was, the same thing happened to Uberbot.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 17:24, 28 February 2008 (EST)

Question on orphaned Townes Van Zandt Songs

Can someone tell me what I am missing here? I recently moved 5 Townes Van Zandt songs out of Other Songs and assigned them to albums. The next day the Janitor added those back into other. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Snesbitt (talkcontribs) .

Replied on User_talk:Snesbitt

浜崎あゆみ (Ayumi Hamasaki)

Hey teknomunk. I was going through dead-end pages, and there are some that would be to your speciality, I think. You don't have to, but I thought I'd point it out, because you could be more thorough there than I could. Happy editing.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 19:54, 5 March 2008 (EST)

One other thing: I think Janitor has stopped fixing double redirects. I noticed that the list has not been touched since last week.
I've gotten all the duplicates taken care of. There appears to be another album or something, but I haven't looked into it.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 03:27, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for that. There was a whole list of 'dead end' songs, so now I know how the page is organized. You made things a lot easier for me.
Ok=K, I was thinking about this: Other Songs are still floating around. I found the 'Uncategorized pages' special page and had a idea. Other Songs all do not have a category, so any Other Song page is on this list. Can you send Janitor marching through there, and replace any linked Other Songs sections with the new black header? That will deposit all Other Songs pages to Orphaned pages, where I will be able to quickly delete each.
Pardon me if I am not making sense, as I was trying to sleep, and this idea was keeping me awake.
Lastly, if you don't want to have to worry about the mix of pages to be reformatted and not, I can prepare a list of artists that need the treatment. Whichever you prefer.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 02:33, 26 March 2008 (EDT)
PS. Did you get that warning/flagging script working for Janitor that we were cooking up?
PPS. If it's that second option you need, I ripped up an example list at User:Kingnee1114lyrics/Sandbox/Othersongsproject.
Okay, I see what you mean with the special page. I'll get to is shortly. As to the flagging script, I added code to the ophan page handling script to keep track of the last 3 runs, but I had a bug so it wasn't actually keeping the last three. It is fixed now and as soon as I have some usable data, I will add the flagging code.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 03:03, 26 March 2008 (EDT)
Alright, the script is running. Have fun deleting ^_^
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 03:52, 26 March 2008 (EDT)
Thumbs up on the expediency. Now we will be fully rid of 'Other Songs'. \me cracks knuckles and prepares for continuing the mass deletion.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 02:32, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
One thing: Don't delete that script. I overlooked a bunch of Other Songs pages that had an updated template on them, seen here at Category:Requests_For_Deletion/Other_Songs_pages. What I want to do is go through the ones we have now, and then when I am ready, just delete the category stuff from the template, and have you re-run the script. Thanks. (I'm going to go toy around with the new functionality of lyricwiki over at wikipedia now.)
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 01:07, 30 March 2008 (EDT)

Not a Big Problem, but...

Hey, I just thought I'd give you a little tap on the shoulder. When Janitor comes across orphaned songs with a special character in the title, it replaces it with the html code. For example, it created &quot;Weird Al&quot; Yankovic this morning, though I already deleted it (it's weird that it isn't in the deletion history, though). Anyway, I know Überbot used to have a problem with this too, so Sean might have a fix for it. I just thought I'd let you know Janitor was doing this. --WillMak050389 12:20, 7 March 2008 (EST)
PS - The link above goes to the correct page, the code that I typed to get it to do this on this page is NOT the page name.

Romaji banner icon.

Hi. I wondered if an icon for "Request for Romanization" would be nice, and I tried making one... The result is this: Romaji. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right or not, or if I should be making any at all; I'm open for any thoughts. Also, I accidentally uploaded a larger one here =P, so, unless it's needed, could it be removed? Thanks.
-- BryghtShadow (talk,うタ歌,contribs) 05:41, 26 March 2008 (EDT)

Ah, crap! Wanted to see what the concept art looked like, and apparently I hit a revision instead. Mucho sorry--how do we fix that?
Rather like the work on that icon, BTW.  ;-)
—  jF 02:12, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
Are you talking about the latest upload of the image? If that is the case, I can have it deleted. Hmm...well I found out what the (rev) link does now...:P I hope that didn't break anything.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 02:16, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
jF, I'm glad you like the icon. I had a gut feeling of "what if..." I tried getting the font as large as possible, but the width was greater than height, and I didn't want to shrink it horizontal-wise. :P
-- BryghtShadow (talk,うタ歌,contribs) 03:11, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
tek', it's the massive one, since I thought that large ones would take a while to show up on some computers, but perhaps I was mistaken :). Looking at the (rev)ved file, I don't think you broke anything. ;)

Need help on new template

I created Template:Policy and there's some problem when I use it on a page (indescribable). I thought that I could come to you because of your knowledge of wikicode and ask for assistance in the template. Could you fix that problem? Thanks, Θ Sean gorter Θtalk|Esperanza 08:39, 3 April 2008 (EDT)

I took a look at it. The indescribableness would be where the page freaks out if you use any peramaters (one thing). If I may ask, what were you intending to do with the 5 parameters you have defined.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 17:48, 3 April 2008 (EDT)
Those were meant to be used with the shortcut template (link).  Sean gorter  talk ESPERANZA!!! 02:16, 9 April 2008 (EDT)

A Couple of Things

The new Special:Wikify is misbehaving a little. see:

Album Name (year)
# Song 1
<includeonly><div style='clear:both'></div></includeonly><noinclude>
Inserts a division break in html so floated items (album art, etc) clear before the next section.
</noinclude>

Also, when did we move from something like Chad Siwik:The Argument being fLetter = A, instead of T? Now the auto creation templates do this automatically.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 16:22, 10 April 2008 (EDT)

The first part is a bit strange... I'll look into that as soon as I have time.
The second part is the correct behavior. Songs, artist, albums, etc. that start with "The" should not use T as the first letter. I wish I had a link to policy on this, but I don't really have time to go digging for it. (Schoolwork is a bit heavy right now)
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 13:14, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
Actually, that isn't true. fLetter means the first letter, whether that first word is an article or not. Here Sean and I recently discussed this. (Well, six months ago.)    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   14:31, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
Uh oh, we have some conflict here. I had been going with the 'First Letter' standard for a long time, and just happened to notice that a new song template skipped a 'the'. I haven't been able to really find documentation not saying 'the' is fletter = T.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 16:37, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
It should probably be more detailed, I suppose, but on the SongFooter template page and other places where fLetter is mentioned, it does say initial letter, with no exclusions given for The, A, or An, and on Help:Contents/Editing/Formatting/Artists#Artist_Template, it is specific that these should still be used for determining fLetter.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   23:08, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
Confusing. I wish I could remember what the page that holds the newsong template. It could explain a few things. So is this a soft open for a new way of categorizing songs? I understand the pros of this, but how far does this go? So far, only 'the' works for newsong, not 'a' or 'los' or anything like that.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 00:39, 12 April 2008 (EDT)
Well, for now, I will just ignore the issue, as right now I am doing deleting of the Other Songs pages mainly.

Batch move & apostrophes

Hiya. WillMak found an issue with apostrophes in the BatchMove script (see note). Does that jump out as something easy to fix? If it's not obvious what's wrong & you don't have time/inclination to fix it, let me know and I'll take a shot at 'er.
Thanks,
-Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 17:21, 12 April 2008 (EDT)

I guess I'll add something as a wish-list-type of thing. The batch move doesn't appear to check if a page is a redirect and so wants to move redirects to new locations, which is a bit weird.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   22:31, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

Last.fm widget

I just wanted to say thank you for the Last.fm 'widget', as today I realised not only that it 'pretty's up' my user page, but that it is in fact extremely useful to me. The reason being, I am currently in the process of uploading lyrics I have transcribed myself and since these lyrics have not existed on any site before now, they aren't on here. As such, they show in red on my Last.fm widget. I click on the title and hey presto! I am immediately provided with a song page without having to go through the process of creating one. This will save me one hell of a lot of time and effort! So thanks again.  ЯєdxxTalk 10:03, 21 April 2008 (EDT)

Artist Template

Yup, broken. Cool break...but broken.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   23:48, 26 April 2008 (EDT)

Could I get a link to a few pages that show this. I just reverted it so it is not a problem until I get it fixed.

I found another bug, and this time it is in the batch move:

Any time I've tried to use batchmove today, I've gotten an error. Just wanted to let you know...
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 02:16, 3 May 2008 (EDT)
I'll look into these once I get my stuff set up again. I just moved, so stuff is still in piles, and I'm trying to figure out what I will be doing for power and internet. But is is strange, for the first bug you reported, I didn't have any problems with the version on my machine. So, I'll look into it, but it may be something that only Sean will be able to fix.

Uncategorized Pages

I have a request for another Janitor script, but I wanted to make sure that you are out of the woods with finals and what-have-you.
So here's the idea: Song pages on Special:Uncategorizedpages would all need a SongFooter at the bottom, and currently there are a lot of these. It'd be a lot of simple repetition, doing this by hand. If you do, could you filter the pages so Janitor would only add a footer on pages with both <lyric> and </lyric> (or <lyrics> and </lyrics>), as well as only 0 (zero) through L? I am still working on the other half of the alphabet with related projects. Thanks.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 22:03, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

Another 5 stars on expediency.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 00:51, 7 May 2008 (EDT)
Well, I need to go to bed. It isn't finished (and now I've forgotten what it was that stopped me from just running the script) and I'll try and finish it tomorrow after work.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 01:49, 7 May 2008 (EDT)

Thank you!

Whilst many might've hoped I'd be struck dumb, you can see from this post that I wasn't exactly lost for words. Seriously, thank you for your vote of confidence teknomunk.

As I indicated to Sean, I feel I still have much to learn, but I will endeavour to do my best to promote LyricWiki and also to not let any of you down.  ЯєdxxTalk 11:44, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

I've been monkeying around with the artist footer, and wanted to see what you thought.
Take a look at User:Kingnee1114lyrics/Sandbox/Testartist for some test cases.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 20:46, 16 May 2008 (EDT)

Ok, I got a puzzle for you. All Music Guide breaks with the inclusion of 'the'. 'The Kinks' returns 'Thekillmetrio', but 'Kinks' returns 'The Kinks'.WTF? I dunno if there is a way to cut off a 'the' without an issue.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 00:15, 17 May 2008 (EDT)
Do you have an example of this behavior? If it is in a URL, you may need to encode it with
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 00:39, 17 May 2008 (EDT)
I had been using that. Neither The+Kinks, or The_Kinks works, the same is with The Decemberists, The Black Keys, it goes down the line. The only thing that I could think of would be to petition Allmusicguide to be less silly about 'the's.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 00:51, 17 May 2008 (EDT)
The less elegant way is to have an |allmusicguide = parameter. (hey, at least my |musicbrainz = works!)
If I had Mediawiki Extension:StringFunctions I think I could get Allmusicguide to work ({{#pos would be my friend) any chance we could add that to our current version?
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 14:44, 19 May 2008 (EDT)
I updated AlbumFooter a little today, so I was hoping I could get everybody to keep an eye out for hiccups. Mainly, now the footer accepts |musicbrainz = and nothing else should be wrong.

RE: The 'Help' Manual...

I've been reworking America and over did the song/album cross-references. See America:A Horse With No Name & this discussion. You can see I suggested a template for additional albums. Since you're busy and I don't want to wait to get the pages fixed can you point me to the documentation for creating templates?
Thanks,
Djp    my talk  •  my contributions  •  all around nice guy     09:20, 17 May 2008 (EDT)

I don't think we have a section here about template creation, but if you are looking for help, try this over at Wikipedia. Probably the best thing you can do is have a look at other templates and copy what you need. If you work with templates for a while, you will get the hang of them.

Auto-New-Page-Creation Issue

I think that you once showed me where to go to look for this, but I can't find the link, so my apologies! Anyhow, EchoSierra noticed that when one uses a red link to create a page, the info that used to get slapped automatically into the editor's box looks like it is missing a step, because stuff like ARTIST appears instead.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   00:11, 9 June 2008 (EDT)

This is probably due to a change I made last night. We were getting those calltime pass-by-reference errors which were filling up the logs and slowing things down (which is strange because the same code went quite a while and the errors weren't showing up), but it appears that I broke the auto-filling ARTIST type stuff in the process. I'll take a stab at fixing it...
-Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 07:30, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
Yup, that was my fault. Fixed now :)

Wikify

teknomunk, could you please check the Wikify for me please. I only came across this version the other day and I thought to myself 'Hey that's new!' so I just used it for the first time. I ticked the box saying 'show album art' (I hadn't got a clue what this would do but it seemed a great idea to me so I thought 'What the heck') Anyways, I happily copied and pasted (half asleep) but then when I looked on artist page (in preview) it was showing the code on the page. I did think it was a little strange what I was presented with after pasting from Wikify into the edit box (I was waking up a bit by this point). It looks to me as if the actual template itself is being pasted when this is used. i.e. <noinclude> and , etc. Just thought you should know.  ЯєdxxTalk 06:14, 14 June 2008 (EDT)

Hrm... I can't get my local install to reproduce this problem (and it works fine here, but that doesn't help much, does it?) I'll talk to Sean to see if it just needs to be re-uploaded, or if something else is going on.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 15:52, 14 June 2008 (EDT)
I have uploaded screenshot...and then i happened to notice this post on your talk page.  ЯєdxxTalk 23:24, 15 June 2008 (EDT)
I don't have any problems reproducing this on the server. I have a separate MediaWiki install on my workstation (which I have access to the source code) that won't reporoduce this bug. The code *should* be the same, but they have two different behaviors. Until I can reproduce it, I can't debug it.
I have sent an email to Sean to re-upload the extension to see if that fixes things, but I haven't heard back from him (and seeing as how you are still bugging me, the problem hasn't gone away). If I don't hear anything in a day or so, I'll send Sean another message.

Sorry, but until I have access to the extension code on the server, I can do nothing else. (Well, I could try guessing what the problem is, though I tried that a bit already and it is the least efficient way to solve the problem)

Janitor and artist redirection

Hi, teknomunk, I'm little confused about bot behaviour while adding songs to OS. Does it take into consideration artist redirection? Take a look at Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds page, where most of songs in a huge OS list belong to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. But Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is redirected to Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. Considering this redirection, most of songs bot added to OS are unsplitted into albums already and should not appear in OS. If bot is unable to take into account redirection, then maybe batch move should be made for all such duplikated songs? Thanks, --Senvaikis 02:18, 17 June 2008 (EDT)

You may not satisfy all our wishes (may be they are stupid enough), but don't you think it would be more decent to drop at least a short answer to request? Sulky Senvaikis (talk) 17:05, 3 July 2008 (EDT)
Sorry, I should have at least acknoledged this.
The thing is that I originally wrote the bot script to do a single task, add all songs that are not attached to a page to the associated artist page. Later I added the artist redirection thing so that redirect pages did not have songs added to them. The purpose behind this was to expose these pages to users and allow them to be sorted/edited/redirect/whatever by a human instead of languishing on a 'List of pages not attached to anything else' page.
I don't think I will be adding anything to try and detect duplicate songs and redirect them. There are too many variables to do it accurately across all pages. It also detracts from what the script was intended to do.
I know that people may not enjoy having a huge list of songs being added to the artist page and many times they will just delete the links instead of actually fixing the source of the problem, duplicate pages, but I think it is the about the best that can be done.

XML Parser

Hey Dude, how's it goin'? I was just looking at the Main page and noticed that some artists (and therefore songs) don't appear right because iTunes lists them with ['s and ]'s in the title. Is there anyway you could upgrade your XML parser to transform them into ('s and )'s before making links out of them? I don't think there's any in the top 10 right now, so you might have to check the LyricWiki:Top_100 --Åqúàŧĩkī - É - Ŧ 07:54, 1 July 2008 (EDT)

Actually this functionality is already on the server, but not in the XML parser. can be used to fix titles. It uses the same process as is used to fix titles for the API. I've updated the Top 100 page already but will do Main Page later if you don't get to it first.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 18:20, 1 July 2008 (EDT)

Very cool. That would make things a lot easier to modify if they are split up like that. My concern would be speed, though. Would a template calling a template on every song page slog load times? If not: we could expand this.

EDIT: By the way, and totally off topic, but I got through all the Other Songs pages as they were. (ZOMG) New Other Songs pages are populating Uncategorized Pages, so you will be able to run that script again.
Haven't you guys got some editing you really need to get on with? smile007.gif
No I'll second what Kiefer said...oooooo pretty! ЯєdxxTalk 21:47, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
Template complexity doesn't impact how long a page takes to load, it just make a page take longer to compile. MediaWiki caches pages so it doesn't have to remake them every time. Not storing these little images locally would make pages take longer. --Åqúàŧĩkī - É - Ŧ 22:56, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
OK, thanks. I would like to say thanks, by the way for all the Ohhs and Ahhs. I am glad you like the idea.

For Åqúàŧĩkī & KingNee: what about adding Image:AllMusic_i.png AMG too? Take a look here for example. --Senvaikis (talk) 05:30, 4 July 2008 (EDT)
I actually was working on a way to use AMG on artist pages with . Very good looking!
